TikTok has been ordered to shut down its business operations in Canada following a national security review. The decision was announced on Wednesday by the Canadian government.
Although users can still access and post content on TikTok, the platform will no longer be able to operate corporate offices in Canada.
Minister of Innovation, Canada, François-Philippe Champagne confirmed the decision Wednesday. He clarified that the government’s stance centers around securing Canadians’ data, rather than limiting their freedom to use the platform.
The government is not blocking Canadians’ access to the TikTok application or their ability to create content. The decision to use a social media application or platform is a personal choice, Champagne said.
TikTok’s offices in Vancouver and Toronto are expected to be impacted by the shutdown order, which will eliminate hundreds of local jobs.
