Shooting Of Unarmed Protesters In Lekki Is Unacceptable-NAWOJ
The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Lagos State Chapter, said the shooting of unarmed protesters in Lekki Toll Gate is unacceptable and shocking.
It described the act as brutal and totally uncalled for.
This submission was made in a statement signed by the NAWOJ Chairperson, Comrade Adeola Ekine, and Secretary, Comrade Lilian Ario.
“It has been a disheartening moment for us as women and mothers since the crisis enveloped our state and the nation as a whole in this past few days.
“We are also saddened by the destruction of some media houses where our colleagues work and earn their living. We, however, thank God that none of our members lost her life.”
Nawoj said, as female journalists, women, mothers and grandmothers in Lagos State, its members feel pain watching youths and leaders of tomorrow suffer brutality and expected to shut their mouths in a country that promises freedom of expression.
“As an association, we do not support disobedience of law; yet, we demand that citizens should be heard”.
While urging Lagos residents to abide by the law and adhere to the curfew order in place, it pleaded with governments to take into consideration the subject matters of the protest and ensure safety of lives and property in our country, Nigeria.
Ekine also urged that hoodlums to desist from crimes.
